Global Summit on Diamond Open Access: Equity, quality, usability, and sustainability

Global Summit on Diamond Open Access

 23-27 October 2023

Toluca, Mexico

The purpose of the Global Summit on Diamond Open Access is to bring together the Diamond OA community of journal editors, organizations, experts, and stakeholders from the Global South and North, in a dialogue that seeks to implement collective action in the spirit of the Recommendations on Open Science from UNESCO and BOAI 20 years, where Equity, Sustainability, Quality and Usability are the pillars of our journey.

This summit expresses a commitment to keep a frank and open conversation to establish common ground. Such a dialogue will allow us to strengthen a more inclusive publishing sector that fosters scientific advances. Joining forces, sharing infrastructure, increasing capacities, meeting, and recognizing each other, and understanding that OA is a means to an end, are the motivations that guide the call for a Global Summit on Diamond Open Access.

For the first time the global OA Diamond community will meet in Toluca, Mexico to exchange and coordinate actions to better support equity in scholarly communication practices. The summit, co-organised by Redalyc, the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, AmeliCA, UNESCO, CLACSO and the Action Plan for Diamond Open Access, will combine two conferences during Open Access Week. The first conference of this double header is the IV Redalyc Journal Editors International Conference, which will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Redalyc and which will include the II Meeting of AmeliCA members. The second conference will welcome the 2nd session of the Diamond Open Access Conference that brings together signatories of the Action Plan for Diamond Open Access.

We invite all actors from all continents who share the vision of scholarly communication for the common good to come together, in a multilingual and diverse event, to start a movement that will lead us to recognize and support Diamond Open Access publishing to direct actions to achieve a global village of knowledge.

Global Summit on Diamond Open Access: Future Perspectives

Part 1 : IV Redalyc Journal Editors International Conference, 20th Redalyc anniversary. II Meeting of AmeliCA Members

Redalyc, in its twenty years, aimed to provide non-commercial scientific journals with an infrastructure to improve quality, increase visibility, adapt to the digital age, and recognize the value of editorial work in Latin America and from 2018 around the world.

Since that year, aware of the challenges of scholarly communication and the emergence of commercial Open Access business models that do not favor equity and inclusion, Redalyc has sought to build a vibrant community of institutions and professionals who are at the forefront of the battle in the non-commercial academic sector: the editors of diamond OA scientific journals, as well as the institutions that support them.

In 2023, Redalyc invites to the IV Redalyc Journal Editors International Conference, with the aim of continuing the dialogue with the main actors that sustain and consolidate the non-commercial publishing.

In turn, the Second Meeting of AmeliCA Members will be held, an initiative launched by Redalyc, UNESCO and CLACSO to unite voices with the conviction that the model of science as a common and public good, where scientific communication and publishing do not seek profit and be in the hands and control of the academy, it is a better solution to achieve a sustainable, inclusive and participatory scientific ecosystem.

With the quote “Our North is the South”, we would like to provide a space for exchanging of views from the South, focused on non-commercial OA so that our approaches are known, recognized and their needs and challenges be widely discussed. An opportunity for the world to see first-hand our model, which is much closer to the perspective of the commons, than any other region in the world.

We invite editors to save the date and join us!

Soon, there will be news about the keynotes, panels and workshops that will take place in this face-to-face event, which will take place at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (the home of Redalyc) in the city of Toluca, State of Mexico, Mexico, on the 23rd and October 24th, 2023.

Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the Second edition of The Diamond Open Access Conference to be held on October 25th and 26th and the closing of the Global Summit on Diamond Open Access on the 27th of October.

Part 2: 2nd Edition of The Diamond Open Access Conference Conference theme: equity, diversity and inclusion

Redalyc, Science Europe, cOAlition S, OPERAS, and the French National Research Agency (ANR) are pleased to invite you to the second edition of the Diamond Open Access Conference from 25 to 26 October 2023 in Toluca, México. The theme of the conference is global equity, diversity and inclusion in academic publishing. We plan to address this theme in all its dimensions: economic, cultural, disciplinary.

This hybrid and multilingual conference – Spanish and English – is organized in partnership with Redalyc Amelica for its 20th anniversary.

We invite you to save the date of this event in your calendar.

The conference will provide an opportunity to bring together the community of organizations and individuals that are signatories of the Action Plan for Diamond Open Access with the communities that practice academic-led Open Access in Latin America. The Action Plan has now been translated into various languages: Spanish, French, and German. Translations in other languages will be available shortly.

We believe this conference will foster a better mutual understanding of the approaches to Diamond Open Access publishing in different regions of the world and allow for a discussion of the central elements of the Action Plan. We will also present two recently started EU-sponsored projects that focus on Diamond Open Access publishing: DIAMAS and CRAFT-OA.

Two pre-conference webinars will be held to share ideas and work collectively with the global Diamond community.

Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the Redalyc Journal Editors International Conference that is held from 23 to 25 October in Toluca.

The first Diamond Open Access Conference was held in a hybrid format in Zadar, Croatia,  in September 2022 and brought together over 300 participants.
